Are You Ready to Deal with Disruptors?

Jewish Community Action (JCA) invites clergy, lay leaders, and staff of congregations and faith communities to a special training titled “When the Trolls Come Marching In: How to Keep Your Community Safe from Disruptors.” This training is meant to share best practices and lessons learned from the numerous incidents during Operation Metro Surge in which extremist influencers came to our city with bad fai th intentions to disrupt our community to further their own political narratives.

For the last six years, JCA has been working with dozens of local community organizations around developing anti-hate and bias programming and policies in the Communities Combating Hate Coalition. Participants will think about how and why today’s disruptors operate the way that they do, use examples of a variety of community responses from the last few months, and hear from subject-matter experts whose analysis and research are valuable resources when evidence of extremist influencers shows up in our community.

Minnesotans have born witness to the critical place faith communities have in meeting the moment when crisis comes: Now how do we keep at it when there’s no end in sight? The faith communities and wisdom gatherings that make up Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul have worked for nearly thirty years to shelter families and build pathways toward stability and mobility through Project Home.

This year’s Mahle Lecture, under the theme "Just Resilience: How to Stay in the Struggle for the Long Haul," will be an opportunity to explore resilience rooted in different faith traditions, specifically using the fight to end homelessness as a case study for what “just resilience” looks like in practice.

Minnesota faith groups answer with tea and coffee

On December 17, 2025, the Religion News Service (RNS) published an opinion piece by Dr. Jen Kilps, network executive of the Minnesota Multifaith Network.

(RNS) — On Friday afternoons, a collective of Christian and Muslim faith communities gets together in Cedar-Riverside, the largest Somali neighborhood in Minnesota, after jumah (Friday prayers). Neighbors gather and simply share Somali tea and coffee, greeting each other while forming relationships.

One of the Christian pastors, the Rev. Jane Buckley-Farlee, involved in this activity explains: “All we do is serve tea and coffee, be friendly, talk, and say, ‘We’re glad you’re here.’ People walk out from Friday prayers and, seeing people gathered, are moved — and they remember. It’s really powerful.”

This gathering has been happening since President Donald Trump’s first travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries in 2017, when people from the Somali community expressed fear of being targeted for persecution from the U.S. government. And those Friday afternoons continue to be a beautiful example of religious hospitality that creates safe space for relationships and community building.

The annual Rutlen Lecture on Faith and Creation in 2026 will explore the value of God’s creation in Job and for us all in the face of climate crises. Under the title "Be-Wilded by Wonder: Just Creation in the Book of Job," Rev. William P. Brown will address questions such as: What would it be like to read the story of Job by reading the ending first? How does one understand the book of Job as a whole, with creation taking center stage? And what about all those wild animals God presents for Job’s consideration?

William P. Brown is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. His work explores justice, creation care, and hope form bibilical and theological perspectives. He is author of several books, including Sacred Tension: Embracing Dialogue and Dissonance in the Old Testament and Deep Calls to Deep: The Psalms in Dialogue and Disruption.

MnMN Convenes Interfaith Leaders from Local Minnesota Communities

Six leaders of local interfaith activities in communities across Minnesota gathered recently in a video conference call convened by Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) to get acquainted, learn about each others' roles, and share about local activities, as well as the various challenges each faces. Leaders from Moorhead, Duluth, Rochester, Prior Lake, Lakeville, and St. Peter participated in the call.

Participants reported on such activities as a bridge-building awards event, tours of houses of worship, day of peace and multicultural festivals, matching volunteers with-nonprofits needing them for services, organizing days of service, establishing an international twin communities relationship, shared concern and support for immigrants and more. The biggest challenge they reported, after Covid halted so much local interfaith activity, has been scheduling time together, mainly due to differing holiday calendars for the various communities and commitments within their own faith communities.

MnMN plans another convening with other individuals in communities around the state, both in advance of MnMN's Annual Conference, "The Time is Now: Powering Pluralism," on November 6 in St. Paul, and after. Participants will gather to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who’ve been forced to flee their homes — families who’ve lost everything and still rise every morning to build new lives with hope, dignity, and quiet strength. In today’s political climate, the theme couldn’t be more urgent. When refugees and immigrants are treated like threats, we must respond with humanity. When fear is loud, our love must be louder.

There will be music, dance, food, and powerful stories — but most importantly, there will be people, together, choosing to build a welcoming city and state for all.

Building a Culture of Encounter: Reflections from a Festival That Lived Its Name

It began with an explosion of rhythm, poetry, and soul. The Schoenecker Center Performance Hall erupted into life as Meet You at the Crossroads opened with welcoming remarks from University of St. Thomas President Rob Vischer , who invited the audience to expand their understanding of “neighbor” through the parable of the Good Samaritan and then brought Somali blues into dynamic conversation with Black gospel-style music. With voices soaring and drums pulsing, the evening opened not with silence, but with celebration. At the heart of it stood two master storytellers: Somali author and poet Ahmed Ismail Yusuf and music legend J.D. Steele Muslim and Christian, Somali and African American, elder and youth, their presence embodied the very spirit of the festival: a harmony forged not through sameness, but through the beauty of shared humanity. A highpoint of the concert featured a young boy from the MacPhail Community Youth Choir delivering a stirring solo of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” drawing the audience to its feet in a moment that was as tender as it was electric. Curated by David Jordan Harris with the Jay Phillips Center and co-produced by Beck Lee and the Cultural Fluency Initiative – with support from the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Music, Film, and Creative Enterprise, Scene Setters, the Encountering Islam Initiative of the Theology Department, and the Chapel Arts Series – the sold-out performance launched the 2025 Culture of Encounter Ideas Festival with a profound sense of awe, welcome, and shared tears. With a waitlist that had to be closed and a crowd that rose more than once in standing ovation, the evening set the tone for what was to come: bold, embodied, and unapologetically plural.

Projects will be unique to the needs of each community, representing colleges and universities across the Midwest. Funding will range up to $5,000.

In a world rife with systemic injustice, “cutting through the noise” has never been more critical. Let us come together with a commitment to justice to embody peace and bear witness in shared public places. Each week, a facilitator representing a unique religious or non-religious perspective will provide reflections on the value of collective, quiet spiritual practice as a means to counter violence and oppression. Attendees will be invited to pray, reflect, meditate according to their own faith tradition, or simply rest in the sights, sounds, and feelings of the present moment. People of all and no faiths are invited to participate!

With a hope for deepening wellness, this six-week series will introduce and practice “retreat” in real time and space, … right where we are! Rev. Dr. Jia Starr Brown and Rev. Ben Connelly are facilitators. Weekly guest presenters include Rev. Terri Burnor, Ameera Khan, Rev. John Lee, and Chris Stedman representing a diverse array of religious and non-religious perspectives.

United’s 34th annual Susan Draper White Lecture will take place February 24th at 7:00 PM and feature Rev. Molly T. Marshall, PhD , United’s president. President Marshall’s lecture for this free event is titled “Battle for the Minds, Revisited.”

Thirty years ago, writer and producer Steve Lipscomb created his first documentary, Battle for the Minds, about the Southern Baptist Convention’s conservative shift and how that was affecting women pastors. Prominently featured in the film was a progressive, feminist professor of Christian theology, and experienced pastor, at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky: Dr. Molly T. Marshall.

This year’s lecture will feature Rev. Dr. Marshall’s reflections on that pivotal episode in her professional and theological life and how the experience shaped the theologian and leader she has become, as United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities’ president. The evening will include a screening of the documentary along with Rev. Dr. Marshall’s remarks and reflections.

These sessions are intended for white-bodied people from across different identities, lineages, traditions, and geographies who are already committed to the work of repair and reparation, and who want to continue to learn, grow, and build community. We will focus on moving from ideas towards action, and on building personal, collective, and systemic reparations practices. Black, Indigenous, Brown, and Native folks and other people of color are also welcome to join.

The Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) in partnership with the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies at the University of St. Thomas is conducting a joint Multifaith Leadership Training. Participants will be non-students from Minnesota to join student Interfaith Fellows from St. Thomas and other Minnesota colleges.

Eligibility: Persons under the age of 35 interested in developing transferable dialogue skills for leadership and for strengthening multifaith relations in the broader community. No prior experience is expected.

Time Commitment: The seminar meets six times by Zoom for 75 minutes approximately every other week during September to November, 2024. Days and times of sessions will be determined based on availability of participants. The program concludes with an in-person public workshop in the spring of 2025. The workshop will involve local scholars, experts, trainers, and leaders.

Content: Topics include dialogue, interfaith dialogue, identity, key tools of dialogical communication, the righting reflex and motivational interviewing, courage and vulnerability for leadership, and empathy in religiously diverse contexts (e.g., DEI, workplace, public life). Topics subject to change.

Stipend: Accepted participants receive an all-inclusive honorarium ($400 each) to put towards attending the six online sessions and travel/lodging for the in-person workshop.

"Multifaith Leadership and Engagement in a Fractured World": at 200 Attendees Strong, Workshop a "Remarkable Success"

The workshop convened on March 3rd at St. Olaf College, featuring a keynote dialogue between Rabbi Dr. Rachel S. Mikva and Professor Najeeba Syeed

With an audience half full of college students, a diverse group of participants explored themes of religious difference and interfaith leadership. The workshop, funded by the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies aimed to enhance religious literacy and interfaith leadership among students. The event explored themes such as peace building, dialogue, trauma informed interfaith work, and storytelling, featuring sessions led by prominent speakers, such as Dr. Danielle Clausnitzer, Imam Sharif A. Mohamed, and Dr, Martha Stortz. Notable discussions included strategies for engaging young people. Additionally, student Interfaith Fellows at St. Thomas shared their experiences and campus engagement strategies. The workshop closed out with a performance by the St. Olaf Taiko Drummers.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we're beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? In this program, Busshō Lahn draws upon insights from the Zen Buddhist tradition to address possible approaches to these questions based on his new book, Singing and Dancing Are the Voice of the Law (2022).

Join Luther Seminary on February 27, 2024, for an evening with ecologist and lay theologian Rick Lindroth. Professor Lindroth will deliver the 2024 Rutlen Lecture on Faith and Creation, “Science, Truth, and Christian Faith in a Time of Eco-Crisis.”

The ecological polycrisis confronting the world today is unparalleled in human history and threatens to unravel, within decades, the very fabric of civilization. Long battered by the “dominion” theology of Christianity, the global environment has suffered further in recent decades because of entrapment in a vortex of science denialism, political polarization, and cultural tribalism. Nonetheless, as a faith system committed to truth, hope, and unity across cultural divides, Christianity also provides a path forward. Rick Lindroth argues for a re-wilding of the Christian ethic of creation care—one that promotes enchantment, connection, reciprocity, and justice—for the betterment of humanity and flourishing of the living world.

This event is free and open to the public, with no registration required. The lecture will be livestreamed via YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

Taking Heart Ramadan Iftar Meals

Taking Heart is a long-running program coordinated by Minnesota Council of Churches and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN) to bring Christians and members of other faith communities together with Muslims for food and conversation during Ramadan.

Ramadan is a blessed month of the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the “five pillars” of Islam and is performed to learn piety, self-restraint, compassion, and generosity.

Iftars will include opening remarks and welcome with a recitation of the Quran and the call to prayer; a presentation on Islam and Ramadan and its customs; breakout groups where a number of topics can be discussed.

Multiple dates during Ramadan. In 2024 Ramadan falls between March 10 and April 9. Locations throughout the state. Additional sites will be added to the registration list as the information becomes available.

Twice every month, Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul joins forces with Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, the Twin Cities Cardozo Society, and Progressive Baptist Church to provide a legal clinic free-of-charge for community members.

Any person needing help with civil legal issues can come in person or get help over the phone. Attorneys can help with landlord issues, divorce or family law issues, debt collection, impounded car, probate, appeal of social security denials, employment or simple wills and health care directives.

The Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) is seeking a communications specialist on a contract basis to manage and implement communications tasks on behalf of MnMN. We are looking for a commitment of 100 work hours per month. Compensation negotiable depending on qualifications.

Responsibilities include:

Publication of a twice-monthly newsletter and special notices.
Facebook posts and other social media, as needed.
Online registration materials and related support for meetings and events (Eventbrite, Zoom, GoogleMeet and in person)
Website updates and edits (Neon Websites).
Layout of material for various forms of publication.
Manage and maintain CRM Constituent Relations Management - NEON Database
Assistance with fundraising, particularly the administrative back-up for sending requests, maintaining the database, and ensuring appropriate communications with donors.
Assistance with member communications and records management.
Attend and support Board and Network Council meetings as requested with notetaking and scheduling.

The communications content will generally be developed by the Network Executive and/or volunteers. The specialist will work cooperatively to create communications vehicles that help MnMN achieve its goals: strengthen relationships, support collective impact and equip leadership.

Qualifications:

Commitment to and agreement with the mission, values and policies stated by MnMN.
Demonstrated skill working cooperatively across cultures and with volunteers.
Curiosity and creativity and excellent writing skills

Proficiencies:

Content creation, editing & design
Social media: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok
Experience in journalism and/or video editing/production
Success at grant writing a plus
Database management skills
Zoom meeting management

MnMN is a relatively new 501c3 though we have existed through several iterations over the past decades. At this time, it has a Network Executive and is largely driven by volunteers committed to the mission. It is an exciting time to be part of MnMN as we work together for a more just and loving world. Thus, we are seeking a person who has some experience working with small nonprofit organizations where everyone needs to adapt to whatever needs to be done. There are a variety of communications and constituent relations management projects to attend to and we hope to find a Communication Specialist who is able to help out as needed and take initiative to suggest better or more effective ways of doing things. The Communications Specialist should be able to strike the balance of working independently without a lot of oversight while at the same time taking a collaborative approach in working with the Network Executive and volunteer leadership to determine direction and next steps.

This fundamental truth transcends our differences and binds us together in a shared humanity. This shared humanity calls us to oppose all prejudice, bias, and acts of hatred. Antisemitism and Islamophobia are dangerous ideologies that breed fear, discrimination, and violence. They dehumanize entire groups of people, reducing them to harmful stereotypes that too often fuel hostility and mistrust. Amid the current global conflict, prejudice and misunderstanding can also reduce victims to mere statistics or 'sides,' where faces, stories and our shared humanity should instead be seen."

In this moment, we know that public acts of reaching out across divides can be particularly fraught, yet we've heard from many of you that you (and those in your communities) are reaching out, deepening relationships, and interrupting hate and discrimination.

In light of this, we are launching our Seeds of Hope Story Campaign and collecting these stories to uplift as examples of standing up for shared dignity and humanity around our country right now.

We're looking for stories of a simple smile shared between strangers, of a bystander interrupting harassment or discrimination, a community response after a hate crime, or a politician visited by constituents.

New Program Coming in 2024 for First-Generation Homebuyers

Minnesota Housing is excited to announce the First-Generation Homebuyer Loan Program offering downpayment assistance to first-generation homebuyers! They plan to launch the program in spring 2024.

Here’s what you need to know about the First-Generation Loan Program:
Maximum loan amount of $35,000
Forgivable if the borrower lives in the home
Half forgiven at year 10
Remaining balance forgiven at year 20
Could be combined with a standard Minnesota Housing downpayment assistance loan, for a total of up to $53,000

Spirituality Among Americans Report from Pew Research Center

In recent decades, Americans have become less likely to identify with an organized religion. Yet a new Pew Research Center survey shows that belief in spirits or a spiritual realm beyond this world is widespread, even among those who don’t consider themselves religious. For example, 83% of all U.S. adults believe people have a soul or spirit in addition to their physical body, and 81% say there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we cannot see it. Three-in-ten say they have personally encountered a spirit or unseen spiritual force. Overall, 70% of U.S. adults can be considered “spiritual” in some way, because they think of themselves as spiritual people or say spirituality is very important in their lives.

Religion is often viewed as the source of conflict and violence, but Professor Najeeba Syeed will discuss how diverse traditions can foster connection, non-violence, and interfaith understanding. She will explore the concept on interfaith just peacemaking, and will address the question – how do we build conflict interventions that prize restoration over retribution from spiritual sources, and practices based on scripture, oral traditions and history of religious communities? Genesis 1:26–27 attributed the following quote to God: “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” But earlier in Genesis 1:22, God supposedly blessed the creatures themselves, telling them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth,” and Genesis 2:15 said, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it, and take care of it.”

Inter-belief Conversation Cafe will examine the Line of Succession to the Kingdom of Earth. What does community well-being mean to you? When you or others in your community feel a lack of connection or a sense of belonging, it can lead to several challenges. These challenges may manifest in feelings of isolation, overwhelm, disempowerment, and distrust.

Adopting or deepening a restorative mindset can significantly enhance communication, empathy, and connection. It empowers us to engage in meaningful conversations, appreciate diverse viewpoints, and build trust and mutual support.

We have personally seen the value of being with each other in this way. RJCA assists those impacted by harm and has facilitated more than 7,000 community conferences and circles over 25 years. MN Peacebuilding has provided training to over 16,000 individuals about trauma awareness, self care for resilience, racial healing and restorative justice principles for over 13 years.

We believe in this work. Today, we want to address a few of the valuable questions you've shared with us after our last email.

Some of you asked about ways that Minnesota is elevating restorative justice. Grassroots efforts and collaboration among many have allowed us to advance restorative measures in several key ways:

Community-Based Programs: Many look to Minnesota as a leader in restorative practices. Grassroot efforts are envisioning and fueling the work of community organizations and individual practitioners across the state.
Implementation in Schools: Several schools in Minnesota have adopted restorative practices as an alternative to the traditional punitive disciplinary response.
Restorative Justice on a County and City Level: Minnesota local governments have been embracing restorative justice practices for both youth and adults for years and are expanding these programs as demand and need increases.
Implementation on a State Level: Recently, the MN legislature created the new MN Office of Restorative Practices to promote restorative justice. Roll out will begin in 2024.

Reflections on an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service by Charlie Curry, MnMN Board Member and Financial Officer

In the summer of 2023, Rabbi Marcus Rubenstein, of St. Paul’s Temple of Aaron, had an idea. Why not hold an interfaith service of gratitude and thanksgiving close to Thanksgiving Day? On November 20 ^th , In collaboration with Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul and the Minnesota Interfaith Network, the idea became reality.

A dozen different faith traditions offered “varied and splendid ways” of celebrating diversity and gratitude with chant, song, music, dance, prayer, spoken word and poetry to a gathering of several hundred people. Traditions represented included Judaism, liturgical and non-liturgical Christianity, Baha’i, Islam, and Buddhism. Rabbi Rubenstein, in his remarks, pointed out that the closest word to gratitude or thanks in Hebrew is “acknowledge.”

That evening, we acknowledged each other’s deep tradition, and in grateful reflection, acknowledged that the connectedness and relationships we build across our various ways of being are an essential component as we navigate through these turbulent times.

Over coffee and cookies when the service ended, many stayed to talk with each other – many just meeting that evening. Hope was expressed that this event become an annual gathering so that deep relationships may develop and grow.

About Me, About You: A Writing Workshop By and For Women of Color, Collegeville Institute

“I write to record what others erase when I speak, to rewrite the stories others have miswritten about me, about you.” – Gloria Anzaldúa

This generative writing workshop will bring together women of color from diverse backgrounds to write creative prose (fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid forms) rooted in personal experience. Participants will generate new work based on the group’s discussions and reflections on lineage, tradition, and faith. In doing so, the workshop seeks to expand limiting narratives about women of color both within their faith traditions and in American culture broadly. We will gather every day to discuss craft and the creative path, write together based on guided exercises and respond to one another’s work. Part of each day will be set aside for participants to write on their own and some evenings will feature community-building activities.

This workshop will be held from April 22-April 28, 2024 at General Theological Seminary in New York City.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, as well as other pain relievers available by prescription. So what exactly is the opioid epidemic and how is it affecting Minnesota's rural and urban spaces? Does the crisis look the same in rural and urban spaces? If not, what are the differences and what are the shared experiences impacting both groups?

Join University of Minnesota researchers and community experts from throughout Minnesota in a statewide University of Minnesota Robert J. Jones Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) Critical Conversation on the basics of opioids and how they are impacting our state. The conversation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 5 via Zoom and at four in-person broadcast locations around the state including: UROC in North Minneapolis; Beyond Brink in Mankato; KOOTASCA Community Action in Grand Rapids; and Promise Neighborhood of Central Minnesota in St. Cloud.

The conversation will be moderated by Edward Krumpotich, chair, Minnesota Harm Reduction Collaborative, and feature panelists Charlotte Loonsfoot, Anishinaabe knowledge keeper, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community; Laura Palombi, associate professor, College of Pharmacy—Duluth campus, University of Minnesota; and John Smith, executive committee chair, Promise Neighborhood of Central Minnesota, St. Cloud.

Writing and Yoga are two powerful, transformational spiritual practices that can bring us closer to God, ourselves, and each other. As a writer and yoga teacher, Ellie Roscher loves to pair writing, breath and movement in a way that invites us to inhabit our bodies and experience deeper embodiment. In this one day writing workshop, Ellie will lead participants through simple breath work, body movement, writing prompts and discussion to unlock and explore our bodies as writers.

This day will center around the idea of the sacred ordinary. The present moment is shimmering with holiness. Yoga and writing are two practices that can dust off the soul and cleanse the lenses of our faith. Together, let’s remember the truth, practice attentive noticing, come back home to the divine in the mundane, and move toward a contentment in the present moment. We will unlock stories living and breathing under our skin. In community, let’s turn toward our bodies with curiosity and reverence on our path toward deeper embodiment, healing, and wholeness.

To prepare for our gathering, participants will be asked to: read a short reading, complete a writing prompt, and practice a brief meditation. Materials for these preparations will be sent two weeks before the workshop.

Join us for an online event where we'll discuss the intersection of Islamophobia and Antisemitism.

Our Coalition was intentionally established as a place for Christians, Jews, and others to work together to counter anti-Muslim discrimination. In this work, we often discuss how anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim discrimination are connected to each other in the United States. Yet, we still hear from our coalition members that for some in the Jewish community, there is a question about whether they have to choose between addressing discrimination and violence that targets Jews or the discrimination and violence that targets Muslims.

This conversation was planned back in June in response to those conversations and experiences. With recent events, this conversation is as important as ever. While this event is designed by, and for the Jewish community, it is an open space.

Is There a Downside to Loyalty?

Navy hero Stephen Decatur asked that his country be kept right, but ended with, “My country, right or wrong.” Does true loyalty require this response? Is our support of our loved ones dependent on whether their actions are praiseworthy, or are we loyal to them even when they’ve gone astray? How much loyalty do we owe our political party, our causes, our nation? Would a political leader who voices our values, but orders protesters shot or imprisons opponents still have our vote? Should we set limits on our loyalty? Is it a transaction, in which our loyalty is offered unless a line is crossed? If our loyalty is conditional, is it still loyalty? Must reason, ethics, or personal values be sacrificed to be faithfully loyal to others?

In criminal law, loyalty can incur serious penalties: Helping out a friend or boss becomes “aiding and abetting,” “concealment of a crime,” or “accessory after the fact.” Is “honor among thieves” an acceptable philosophy of life? Loyalty to one’s country can be considered a war crime -- if immoral orders are obeyed. Omertà, or the Code of Silence, is not just loyalty among the Mafia; among police or professionals, it can likewise permit & encourage injustice. But if colleagues cannot trust each other, how can they work together? Does anyone love a “snitch?” Is there a higher loyalty to justice, truth, and morality that outweighs loyalty between pals or co-workers? Who decides what the higher loyalty is?

In The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, Jonathan Haidt argues that the innate moral foundations of human beings are care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity, and possibly liberty. Can we be moral if we are not loyal? Is loyalty as innate a foundation of morality as claimed? Do the other qualities provide a balance that tells us when loyalty has gone too far? What of those who may reject sanctity as a value, by rejecting any loyalty to a religious authority or God? What of those whose motto is not to be loyal, but to “Resist authority”? Haidt associates care and fairness with liberals, and loyalty, authority, and sanctity with conservatives. What does this tell us about loyalty and these other human traits as universal moral values? He argues that ultimately, we rely on intuition, not reason. How can we evaluate the morality of loyalty if it is a feeling -- not an objective fact?

Is the loyalty that inspires firefighters to run through flames to save others the same loyalty that inspires terrorists to burn others alive? Is the real question, “Loyalty to what”? Is loyalty less an abstraction than a gift of one’s heart? Does “loyalty” subjectively mean anything without an object of our loyalty? How do we evaluate the competing calls upon our loyalty? Must country or party mean more than family? Must belief reign over all other loyalties and duties? Are all loyalties required to be to a real human being? What real human being could be worthy of all our loyalties? Does the flag to which we pledge our undying allegiance symbolize “Mom, Apple Pie, and The One We Left Behind,” all rolled up into one? Can we not have a sliding scale of loyalties with one put before the others? Must we use reason to assess all potential objects of our devotion? How can we then decide what (or who) to be loyal to?

GOP Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater said in 1964, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” Given that viewpoint, can there ever be a downside to loyalty? If the cause is good, how can we hold back? Is there a part of us that thinks Goldwater’s quote was correct? Or do we forget that although his quote doesn’t refer to liberty and justice “for all,” his often-unquoted very next statement indeed notes, “The beauty of this federal system of ours is in its reconciliation of diversity with unity.” Do we doubt his words in the telling, or in the broader retelling? If we doubt what we hear, to whom then do we listen? Who merits loyalty, and are we meritorious, or foolish, to bestow it?

On Monday November 20 from 7-9 PM by Zoom, Inter-belief Conversation Café will examine loyalty (possibly extremely, possibly in moderation). Our agreements of open-mindedness, acceptance, curiosity, discovery, sincerity, brevity, and confidentiality should keep us true blue (or royal red?) in the process. So be loyal to our dialogue -- show up!

Reflections on the Conference from MnMN Leaders

I want to share a few observations following the 2023 MnMN Annual Conference held last week. I'm sure you've noticed the difference between a high energy room full of people and one where there is a low level of energy and camaraderie. The MnMN conference was definitely a case of the former, where the buzz was loud and persistent. From the opening, when Prof. Anant Rambachan, MnMN's board chair, welcomed folks and invited--no, urged--us all to help create an "all inclusive 'we'" along with the inevitable "we" of our many separate identities and affiliations, to the wrap-up of the Sikh Langar meal, I sensed an unusually high level of energy as participants greeted old friends and met new ones.

The conference is meant to inspire, connect and equip people, from the widest range of faith traditions possible, for the various tasks of interfaith work carried out by MnMN members and friends--relationship-building, service, increasing religious literacy, advocating for justice, and welcoming strangers to name a few.

Under the theme of "Hospitality?," the sessions illuminated both ancient wisdom and contemporary challenges about how we treat each other. We all know that our world-globally and locally-is challenged by human tendencies to separateness, stereotypes, fear, ignorance, animosity and even violence. I, for one, felt uplifted and encouraged by the energy and sense of the magic of meeting across differences, hearing the stories, meeting with peers, addressing specific topics, and seeing the dynamic shift from "we-they" to "us." My hope and prayer is that this shift can be multiplied over and over, and that MnMN will continue to grow into being a means for diverse faith communities to move into greater appreciation of their common features and interests, leading to common action for the common good. The conference seemed to me to be an important step in this direction. See you at the next one!

Increasingly, young people are growing less interested in participating in traditional faith communities. During the 2023 Annual Minnesota Multifaith Network Convening, myself and Dr. Hans Gustafson from the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies discussed the differing trends in religiosity and spirituality among young people today. In this presentation, both Dr. Gustafson and myself discussed why and how young people are increasingly reimagining faith, community, and activism within the context of their own lives.

Some of the important elements of my own presentation involved increasing disaffiliation and the activist considerations of young people when selecting their own religious affiliations. According to the Pew Research Institute, 49% of “nones,” or those without a fixed, institutional religious tradition, have left their childhood religious tradition because they simply no longer believe, 20% dislike organized religion, and 18% are religiously unsure. Perhaps more important than these statistics, however, are the reasons why “nones” are increasingly suspicious of mainline religious affiliation. Again according to Pew Research Institute, in addition to the lack of belief in the divine, atheists, agnostics, and “nothing in particulars” have reported that lack of satisfaction with the positions religious organizations take on social and political issues, the organizations themselves, and their leaders are all major reasons why “nones” are continuing to leave these communities.

Taking the feelings of “nones” into consideration, there is a great potential for growth among institutions to help re-integrate these “nones’ or “nothing in particulars” into religious or spiritual communities. The first opportunity for growth is for organizations to become more involved and outspoken about their commitment to social justices issues. Openly supporting the issues that young people support such as climate change, anti-racism, and LGBTQ+ inclusion and ensuring that action is taken to support these issues, in turn, has the potential to reinstate trust in the minds of “nones” who left religious organizations due to a lack of concern for such groups. Another outlet religious institutions can utilize in their activism, and to gain support for their communities, is the use of social media. Advocating for causes, including your own, on social media creates more interest for those who use it regularly, such as millennials and gen Z. These approaches, and more, can help to grow your community and help young people feel more a part of your mission. It was a pleasure to share these facts and more during the conference.

The recent breakout session at the MnMN Annual Conference, titled "Beginning the Conversation about Religion and DEI in Higher Education in Minnesota," was a thought-provoking gathering for Higher Education professionals working in Minnesota. Participants, representing twelve colleges and universities in Minnesota, both public and private, discussed the integration of religious diversity into DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts on their campuses. Key concerns addressed included the challenges of incorporating religion into broader DEI initiatives, even within confessionally religiously affiliated schools, and the need for holistic approaches that consider the intersection of various identities, such as race, gender, culture, language, and religion. The session highlighted the evolving religious landscape on campuses, with a growing presence of interfaith curious non-religious and religiously unaffiliated students. Several participants acknowledged that DEI efforts often become siloed among different campus groups, leading to a lack of cohesive strategy and missed opportunities for leveraging the expertise of faculty who study religion, culture, and other relevant areas.

The discussion also addressed the skills and knowledge often needed to handle crises related to religious diversity, the framing of DEI work (navigating discomfort while minimizing harm), and the importance of non-curricular opportunities for students to engage across differences. Participants considered how to extend DEI efforts beyond representational diversity, focusing on curricular and structural aspects, and the importance of looking beyond their campuses to learn from community partners and organizations. The MnMN Higher Education Convening Group extends an open invitation to all Higher Education professionals in Minnesota who engage religious diversity in their work and would like to join the group, contribute to the development these efforts, or lead future initiatives that engage religious diversity. The Convening group is led by Hans Gustafson (University of St. Thomas), Matt Maruggi (Augsburg University), Jen Kilps (MnMN), Anantanand Rambachan (St. Olaf College Emeritus), Marty Stortz (Augsburg University Emerita), Deanna Thompson, (St. Olaf College), and Andy Tix (Normandale Community College).

What are you doing on Thursday, November 16th? That day is Give to the Max Day —Minnesota’s day of giving where people all over the state come together to support their favorite nonprofits. Once again, the Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) is participating!

We’re working with faith and interfaith leaders and organizations statewide toward a more just and loving world. Since our founding in 2018, we’ve been expanding our membership, work and influence. In 2023 alone, we’ve collaborated with Augsburg University on a statewide summit on hate prevention, presented Thinking Together Religiously seminars, established an Emerging Leaders Multifaith Action Council, co-hosted the Multifaith Leadership Seminar with the Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Studies, partnered with state and regional organizations on TRUE Tuesday programming and supported an interfaith speakers network and a higher education interfaith council.

This year’s innovative and timely conference, “ A Place of Welcome? ” will invite us to consider religious practices of hospitality and what that means for Minnesota’s faith and secular communities. An exciting highlight will be experiencing a traditional Sikh Langar dinner.

These collaborations and events are possible only through the generosity and kindness of organizations and individuals who have responded to MnMN’s vision and mission through gifts both large and small.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? In this program, Busshō Lahn draws upon insights from the Zen Buddhist tradition to address possible approaches to these questions based on his new book, Singing and Dancing Are the Voice of the Law (2022).

Filmmaker and director Sheldon Wolfchild (Dakota) and Co-Producer Steven Newcomb (Shawnee, Lenape) collaborated to bring this story to the screen and Wolfchild will be on hand following the showing to answer questions.

Antiracism Literacy Partners is offering the documentary as one of its resources this month for those who wish to engage in deeper conversation about this topic.

We are thrilled to curate an art exhibition that highlights the significance of bringing people together through art across various faiths, promising a beautifully diverse showcase.

Here are the requirements to participate:

1) Artists must be 16 or older to participate.

2) All mediums of art is accepted. (pencil, clay, watercolor, photography, oil paints, e.t.c.). If submitting a sculpture, it must take up no more than 16 inches x 16 inches when placed on a surface, and must be no taller than 30 inches.

3) Kindly submit a maximum of 3 pieces of art. To submit multiple artworks, you can fill this form out again with the information of the other piece.

MNIPL’s Reparations Learning Labs support a community of doers who are committed to repairing the harms of colonization through action.

These monthly sessions will help people who are ready to move beyond reading and discussion into doing.

Being a part of these labs invites us into our commitment to the forever work of decolonizing ourselves and our communities.

Here's how the sessions work:

We start with a topic of conversation about potential concrete actions towards reparations in our own lives
We dig into how that approach would feel for participants in their work or communities
We collaboratively create a practical toolkit that we can take with us into our work and communities

Ideally, folks will come to all four sessions, but people can also come for just one or two. All sessions will take place on Zoom.

Before you sign up, there's a couple things to know:

The events are free to attend, but we're asking folks to commit to taking action in order to participate. You can either donate to support our BIPOC Reparations Advisory Table or share our Reparations Learning Tables with a friend or neighbor.

We also recommend that you watch our Reparation Learning Tables videos before you come - these are a primer on what reparations are, why they're important, and how to make a commitment to change.

Who are these sessions for?

These sessions are designed specifically for white folks of faith who are ready to move past learning about the problem into doing something about it.

You may be just starting out, stuck in your journey after trying stuff that hasn't worked as expected, or coming back to this intentional work.

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who are interested in this work are also welcome!

All the sessions will be over Zoom. We'd love for you to join us for all four sessions, but if you can only make one or two, that's great, too!

The Secretary of State is a constitutional office in the executive branch of state government. The work of the Secretary of State’s Office affects Minnesotans in all 87 counties of the state. One of the office’s main responsibilities is overseeing statewide elections and operating the statewide voter registration system. Presentation and Q&A with Ben Connelly, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Sunday, October 29

Ben Connelly will give a presentation hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The format is a 45-50 minute presentation by Ben followed by a 25-30 minute Q&A period. Ben Connelly is a Soto Zen teacher and Dharma heir in the Katagiri lineage. He also teaches mindfulness in a wide variety of secular contexts including police training and addiction recovery groups. He works with multifaith groups focused on intersectional liberation, and racial and climate justice. Ben is based at Minnesota Zen Meditation Center, travels to teach across the United States, has written for Tricycle and Lion’s Roar magazines, and is author of Inside the Grass Hut, Inside Vasubandhu's Yogacara, and Mindfulness and Intimacy.

St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Minnetonka will be hosting a watch party of the truth and reconciliation ceremony being held at Ḵunéix̱ Hídi Northern Light United Church, on Oct 8, at 2:00pm CST. In 2022, the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly adopted, without amendment, the Overture proposed by Ḵunéix̱ Hídi Northern Light United Church and the Presbytery of the Northwest Coast. This issued apologies and commitments of reparations for the racist closure of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Juneau, Alaska, as well as the insult, injury, and trauma caused to the Tlingit people and Rev. Dr. Walter Soboleff. Najeeba Syeed, an endowed chair and executive director of Interfaith at Augsburg University , a private college in Minneapolis, Minnesota, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, said it is essential to include faith as a part of DEI discussions, especially on college campuses.

If it is not, Syeed said, students often feel they are not seen, understood, or heard for the wholeness of who they are. “And that’s more than a theoretical or ideological issue,” she said, “it manifests in students’ everyday lives, especially students facing multiple forms of marginalization.”

With more than 30 bills across the U.S. targeting DEI initiatives at public colleges — including Arizona, Oregon and Texas — Syeed fears that people who are religiously observant will lose protections and opportunities for conversations across difference. “Whether people are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or otherwise. The fear is that they can feel invisible if we remove religious diversity as part of higher education model and structures,” she said.

Despite her worries, Syeed said the current moment is a time to think about what has worked and what has not with DEI and interfaith programs across the country. For them to be successful, she said, they have to do more than provide one group protection but “be predicated on the unique needs and definition of the type of community a university is trying to establish.” Syeed believes universities should involve more stakeholders to commit to a particular DEI vision that is practical enough to evaluate and adjust as campuses continue to change.

Welcome to Mount Zion, the oldest synagogue in the Upper Midwest. You will be visiting our fourth building since our founding in 1856. Placing this building, designed by the internationally renowned modernist, Bauhaus architect Erich Mendelsohn, on Summit Avenue in 1953 was a way of marking the full inclusion of Jews in the fabric of St. Paul cultural and civic life. The congregation was founded before the State of Minnesota by eight German Jewish families and today is about 680 households. In 1897, the Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Society founded Neighborhood House in the West Side Flats to welcome Eastern European Jews, and Mount Zion members continue to support this important work. The congregation conducts an active religious school twice a week, three weekly study groups, a full adult learning and social calendar, and daily services along with Shabbat (Sabbath) and Festival services. 1:30 The House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Avenue

In 1914 two Presbyterian congregations who worshiped in downtown St. Paul since 1849 and 1855 merged and moved to the grand new Gothic Revival building on Summit Avenue designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram. Formally dedicated in 1917, it subsequently emerged as The House of Hope Presbyterian Church, a "high church” among Presbyterian churches with magnificent music, a focus on liturgy and preaching, and ongoing learning. The House of Hope organ is the magnum opus of Charles Fisk, one of the first to use “tracker actions.” At the core of House of Hope is a deeply embedded commitment to the greater community exemplified by its major participation in what became Prior Crossing housing for homeless youth, the Jeremiah Program, the Ain Dah Yung Center, Habitat for Humanity and the community garden. The church is home to a choir school, maintains an art gallery, continues to host programs in all of the arts and sponsors a Speaking Series and Theological Seminar featuring the outstanding thought leaders of our time. 2:15 St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 900 Summit Avenue

Building completed in 1952, Mid Century. Original Organ, Wicks Organ Company, brought up from the old church; additional pipes added in 1952 by the Hunt Organ Company. SPUCC was started 143 years ago by German Immigrants. The current building was constructed because the previous building in downtown St. Paul was torn down to build an approach to the state capitol. The congregation was part of the German-American Evangelical and Reformed Tradition, which was a denomination formed in the wake of the Reformation as some German Protestants reformed beyond Lutheranism. Five streams of Christian denominations in the United States came together, officially, in 1957, and St. Paul's Church joined the United Church of Christ. Of interest, the congregation almost closed 12 years ago, having gotten down to about 30 members. But, they decided to revitalize, called their first female Senior Minister, Norma Rae Hunt, and now number at approximately 350, including children. The St. Paul Childhood Center, a renowned program for infant through Pre-K is located in our building. Our programs consist of Worship, Music and Spiritual Life; Belonging and Community; Social Justice and Outreach; and Faith Formation across the age span. This Old Catholic community holds services in the chapel of St. Paul’s. We are a Community of The Old Catholic Church but our style and thoughts are far from Old! Our name, Holy Presence. was born in the midst of the pandemic. After prayer and contemplation, the thoughts of the things we were most in need of were the presence of the Divine and the much-missed presence of each other. The name Holy Presence was born in the summer of 2020. The Old Catholic Church has its roots in Northern Europe. The seat of leadership is in Utrecht, Netherlands. Old Catholics have many of the same beliefs as the Roman Catholic Church, however, we ordain women and therefore have inclusive rights for all to the sacraments. "I’ve been struck by the relationships that exist between religious communities of vast difference in what is often called fly-over country. My experience has been that these are not regions to fly over, but to learn from.

When I first came to the US, in the 1970s my father landed in Bloomington, Indiana for his doctorate program. In those years, as immigrants we had little to no access to zabiha markets where we could find meat that was permissible to eat. My father heard that my school bus driver, Mrs. Anderson, had a farm and he proceeded to speak to her about going out to her farm and we found her open to our form of Muslim ritual slaughter of animals on her farm.

It is a small example, let me share another from the same region I learned about when I went to a Quaker college. The headquarters of the Islamic Society of America was in Plainfield, Indiana. The campus minister at my college in North Carolina recalled how his extended family in Indiana would reach out to support Muslims when the sign for the organization had been shot at in the 80s. These are a few of the many stories of the central part of this country in which solidarity and just pure necessity created deep and lasting multi-faith relations. What I mean to say is this is not new."

Healing Minnesota Stories is an effort to create understanding and healing between Native American and non-Native people, particularly those in various faith communities. Native people have suffered deep trauma over many years, losing their land, language, and culture; all who call Minnesota home are the lesser for it. While many people and institutions contributed to that trauma, it happened with the full participation of Christian churches. We all still need healing, healing is doable, and churches have a role to play in healing.

We believe in the healing power of stories. One way church members can engage in healing is by participating in Healing Minnesota Stories Dakota Sacred Sites Tours. Groups travel to local places and hear stories about why these places are both sacred and traumatic to the Dakota people. Attendance is limited. FYI: Tours have been popular and fill quickly.

From early on Christians have defined Christianity in relation to the Jewish tradition from which it emerged. But when articulating Christian faith vis-à-vis Judaism, most Christian teachers and preachers down through the centuries have misrepresented Judaism, expressing anti-Jewish perspectives that often have fanned the flames of antisemitic attitudes and behaviors. The result of this has not only been dire for Jews, including in the last several years in the United States where there has been a dramatic increase of hate crimes against Jews, but has also distorted Christian self-understanding and faith. In this presentation, Rabbi Dulkin will focus on several things that Christians generally misunderstand about Judaism and why this matters for Jews, Christians, and others.

Rabbi Ryan Dulkin teaches in the theology department at the University of St. Thomas and directs the department’s recently created Exploring Judaism Initiative. A native of California, Rabbi Dulkin earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in English literature from San Francisco State University and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in midrash and scriptural interpretation from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (New York City) where he also received his rabbinic ordination. His scholarly articles have appeared in Jewish Studies Quarterly, Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and The Routledge Dictionary of Ancient Mediterranean Religions.

The recent open-access volume Complexities of Spiritual Care in Plural Societies: Education, Praxis and Concepts (De Gruyter, 2022) contributes to an emerging field that could be referred to as "plural spiritual care and chaplaincy," by innovatively bringing together contributions from a broad range of contexts and religious traditions. Including empirical work and conceptual explorations, the volume helps to fill the gap between practices and developments related to plural spiritual care and chaplaincy in the scholarly discourse, and their application for practitioners serving religiously diverse populations in health and chaplaincy settings. In this webinar, editor Anne Hege Grung will introduce the book and project, contributor Nazila Isgandarova will discuss female voices in Islamic spiritual care, and contributor Su Yon Pak will explore Buddhist chaplaincy education at a Protestant seminary. Challenged by our experiences of violence across the Twin Cities in recent years, Friends for a NonViolent World (FNVW), in collaboration with Twin Cities Nonviolent (TCNV) and many other peace and justice groups are organizing a Walk for Peace and Justice on September 30, 2023. We are calling on all Minnesotans to come out and participate in this great event. This Walkathon is a fundraiser for FNVW’s peace programs in our communities.

This event takes place on Day 10 of Twin Cities Nonviolent annual 12 Days Free from Violence. Brackett Park in Minneapolis will be the kick-off location. We will walk to the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge for a Hands Across the Mississippi Ceremony followed by food, music and speakers at the Danish American Center. Together we will uplift the vision of a world beyond violence and a culture rooted in nonviolence.

George Floyd Global Memorial (GFGM) and the community at George Floyd Square will host a portion of their 3rd Annual Rise & Remember celebration at 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis, MN.

Rise and Remember exists to hold in remembrance those we have lost to the pervasive impacts of systemic racism, and to gather people to pursue racial justice and equity. Throughout Rise and Remember, we will host a two-day conference, a candlelight vigil, a gala, and a festival. Our vision is that through this annual event, we can inspire people to rise to the occasion, come together in community, and build racial equity.

Our theme for Rise & Remember 2023 is Ubuntu: Make the Impossible, Possible. Ubuntu is a South African word and philosophy translated as, “I am, because we are.” It derives from the Xhosa (Kōs-uh) language and acknowledges the relationship between one's self and humanity. Ubuntu directly challenges western ideals of individualism with ideals of collectivism. Essentially, it values people over profit, community over individualism, and collective power over individual power. When we see how our humanity is inextricably bound up in the humanity of others, we will be moved to guarantee liberation, equity, and justice for all.

The Niagara Foundation of Minnesota is excited to announce its revamp of the 3Faiths@OneTable project after a pandemic hiatus and invites you to join this year's cohorts! The goal of this project is to create meaningful friendships across differences over the sharing of a small meal or snack in each other's homes. Once signed up, Volunteer Project Manager Elizabeth Kulus will match three families/couples/friends to make a cohort. She will facilitate a brief orientation meeting so that folks can have the chance to meet and get to know each other. Cohorts agree to meet at least once at each other's homes over the next three months for a total of three gatherings.

It can be difficult to meet new people nowadays, and oftentimes the people we most often interact with are from similar backgrounds as us. The 3Faiths@OneTable project provides a low stakes opportunity for people to create genuine connections. Even though we have included the word "faith" in the name of the project, we encourage people from all religious and non-religious backgrounds to join. The goal of the project is not to convert or proselytize, but simply to learn about each other's differences and find commonality through friendship. MnMN is now accepting applications for Multifaith Leadership Training Program

Eligibility: Persons under the age of 35 interested in developing transferable dialogue skills for leadership and for strengthening multifaith relations in the broader community. No prior experience is expected.

Time Commitment: The seminar meets six times by Zoom for 75 minutes approximately every other week during September to November, 2023. Days and times of sessions will be determined based on availability of participants. The program concludes with an in-person public workshop in the spring of 2024. The workshop will involve local scholars, experts, trainers, and leaders.

Content: Topics include dialogue, interfaith dialogue, identity, key tools of dialogical communication, the righting reflex and motivational interviewing, courage and vulnerability for leadership, and empathy in religiously diverse contexts (e.g., DEI, workplace, public life). Topics subject to change.

Stipend: Accepted participants receive an all-inclusive honorarium ($400 each) to put towards attending the six online sessions and travel/lodging for the in-person workshop.

Didier Annual Seminar on Religion and Contemporary Thought was endowed in 1993 as a retirement tribute to Reverend Didier in honor of a ministry mindful of the many voices of the spirit and the profound changes we continue to experience in contemporary thought and culture. President and CEO of Interfaith Alliance, Rev. Paul Raushenbush served as Senior Vice President at Auburn Seminary, Executive Editor of HuffPost Religion, and Associate Dean of Religious Life and The Chapel at Princeton University. Most recently, he was Senior Advisor for Public Affairs and Innovation at Interfaith America.

An ordained Baptist minister, Rev. Raushenbush has been a leader in the interfaith movement to protect freedom and preserve democracy. He comes from a dual line of pioneers in the very work he has been called to do. As the great-grandson of the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis and great-grandson of Baptist theologian Walter Rauschenbusch, a key figure in the Social Gospel movement, Rev. Raushenbush’s commitment to interfaith advocacy comes in part from his own interfaith background.

MnMN Religious Literacy Immersion Event for Forum on Workplace Inclusion Conference

The Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) was honored to be a part of this years Forum for Workplace Inclusion from Augsburg University. For one of their sessions, we conducted a daylong Religious Literacy Immersion Experience with Dr. Brian Carwana from Encounter World Religions and Dr. Lara Trubowitz from ADL . We were hosted by leaders of the Hindu Temple in Maple Grove, the Northwest Islamic Community Center (Masjid Al-Kareem) in Plymouth and Temple Israel in Minneapolis.

At the Hindu Mandir , we were welcomed by Vishal Agarwal; Pooja Bastodkar; and Sudesh Chhabra, the ViceChair of the Hindu Society. Vishal led us on an excellent tour of this magnificent temple with 21 ornate shrines each honoring a different representation of the same single God. The Hindu Mandir is an architectural wonder and spiritual home to the majority of Hindus in MN.

Next we visited the Northwest Islamic Community Center where we were greeted by Shaykh Saifullah Muhammad and Dr. Imam Tamim Saidi, Resident Scholar of the Islamic Resource Group (IRG ). Both Imams engaged in a lively discussion of the basic tenets and practices of the Islamic faith. This was even more impressive as both leaders are celebrating and leading Ramadan prayers and activities. Shaykh Muhammad was up most of the night in prayer and both were fasting. They included our group in observing the noon (Zuhr) prayer recited by Shayk Muhammad.

Our tour ended at Temple Israel where we were greeted by Rabbi Ricky Kamil. Dr. Lara Trubowitz presented a compelling talk on the recent rise of Antisemitism and how it is affecting our Jewish brothers and sisters as well as its harmful influence on society as a whole.

All in the Circle arts and nature camp is designed to give children the opportunity to fall in love with Earth and be co-creators of a culture of kindness. Informed by the wisdom, teachings, and experience of educators, spiritual leaders, and developmental psychologists, campers spend their days exploring, singing, doing art, playing games, learning, and gaining skills and "know-how" to live peacefully with each other and the natural world.

About the 2023 Camp

In this year's camp, we will explore the Council of the Willow Pond with its resident beaver family and the complex web of animals, plants, insects and trees that live together in cooperation. Beavers are a "keystone species," which means they play a critical role in maintaining the health and function of all the beings that live around them. Beavers also work together to transform landscapes. They transform deserts into lush ecosystems that support sandhill cranes and deer, birds, plants, and trees. Beaver dams create silt-rich meadows and wetlands that break down toxins such as pesticides. In the cold winter months, beaver families have been known to welcome creatures who need shelter from the cold.

Through stories, council meetings, and nature-bases activities, campers will experience the wisdom of the beavers. We will build forts, befriend trees, dig rivers in the mud, create imaginary worlds, play hide-and-seek, become animals, go on adventures, hold councils, and experience the interconnectedness of all things.

Using imaginative, sensory, and nature-based play, campers will have fun while learning to express their insights and feelings, listen to others, work effectively through conflict, and act as a team to navigate adventures and challenges.

The curriculum, developed by AJ and Erin Pratt, is inspired by the work of Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods; David Sobel, author, psychologist, professor, and director of Antioch Center for Place-based Education; Bill Plotkin, author of Nature and the Human Soul, and others.

We were delighted to have a conversation with Dr. John Merkle and Dr. Hans Gustafson about the compelling work they do at each of the Jay Phillips Centers. The activities of the two centers show that there are opportunities for interfaith dialogue throughout the state, whether you are in the Twin Cities or Greater Minnesota. Their work also shows that interfaith connections are not only necessary, they can be joyful and transcendent.

The Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning at Saint John’s University has its roots in the university’s Jay Phillips Chair in Jewish Studies, established in 1969 and named after the Jewish philanthropist who endowed it. The Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies at the University of St. Thomas has its roots in the university's Center for Jewish-Christian Learning, which was established in 1985. In 1996, the centers became a joint enterprise. In 2009, the center's mission was expanded to interfaith learning in general and it was given its new name to reflect that.

In 2017, the center was divided into two partner centers. Dr. Merkle said, “Given the different constituencies and the very different situations of the two branches, I thought it was time to move back to two separate entities that collaborate.” Dr. Merkle was appointed the director of the Jay Phillips Center at Saint John’s University and Dr. Gustafson was appointed the director of the Jay Phillips Center at the University of St. Thomas. Dr. Gustafson said, “They are both Catholic universities but they do have their own separate cultures based on where they are and the students they draw. Being separate centers allows us to be more nimble with our programming, to serve what might be unique about each of our campuses.” St. Thomas serves a diverse urban population and about half of their event attendees are from the general community. Saint John’s events primarily draw in students and faculty from the university and the College of Saint Benedict. They also collaborate with the growing Somali community in St. Cloud and coordinate student visits to local mosques.

“By far the most rewarding part of directing the center is the relationships, the people that I get to interact and work with in the community, such as collaboration partners at other institutions and nonprofits. The relationships are rich and I can't imagine doing it without that,” said Dr. Gustafson. Minnesota Multifaith Network is honored to be one of the partners in organizing a day-long Multifaith Leadership Workshop with the Interfaith Fellows Program of the Jay Phillips Center at St. Thomas, taking place on Saturday, May 6. The keynote address will be given by Simran Jeet Singh, Ph.D., the Executive Director of the Religion & Society Program at the Aspen Institute and the author of the national bestseller The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life. In this lecture, he will draw from his personal experiences and from hate incidents he has witnessed firsthand to share the wisdom he has gained on what it really takes to choose love over hate. The lecture and workshop are free and open to the public. Participants who attend the lecture do not need to attend the workshop, but are welcome to. This spring, the Jay Phillips Center at Saint John’s is hosting a series of concerts and conversations called Echoes of the Divine: A Dialogue between Jewish and Christian Musical Traditions, featuring Amy Grinsteiner (piano), Thomas Schönberg (cello), and David Jordan Harris (moderator). “It’s apt because the center has roots in the chair in Jewish Studies and always promoted interfaith dialogue between Jews and Christians. The concerts are not only drawing on music from these two traditions but are also facilitating dialogue. What in this Jewish music speaks to the hearts of Christians? What in the Christian music can speak to the hearts of Jews? How can we have a better appreciation for each other’s traditions as a result of this?” said Dr. Merkle. The concerts will take place at Saint John's University on Monday, April 3 and Thursday, April 20. Learn more at this link . Dr. Merkle said, “Many people feel that interfaith dialogue can water down or attenuate their faith. This is not my experience at all. My experience for so many years now is that students feel spiritually enriched through interfaith dialogue. They can find there is a way to be faithful to their own tradition while acknowledging the goodness, truth, and beauty in other traditions. Hans and I have been working to try to help others find that. There are so many people who are pushing back against the interfaith movement. I think it’s wrongheaded because I think that young people in particular, and people of any age, can find a new lease on their life of faith through interfaith engagement.”

“When students and nonstudents get into interfaith dialogue, they find there’s nothing to be afraid of. What happens most of the time is that people grow in their own worldview, rather than watering it down. They realize there is a space for them. Even if they’re non-religious or have a secular way of life, there’s room for them to join the conversation. Sometimes that is a misconception that there are borders around who can and cannot participate. I want people to know that truly all voices are welcome and we’re stronger together when we have all voices at the table. Great minds don’t need to think alike,” said Dr. Gustafson.

Faith Leaders’ Summit - March 30, 8 am

JRLC’s Leadership would like to invite you to our Faith Leaders’ Summit program on the morning of March 30th as part of your Day on the Hill engagement. Faith Leaders’ Summit presentations will complement and build on the Day on the Hill program on March 29th.

The Faith Leaders’ Summit program will be hybrid. In-person attendees will join us at Christ on Capitol Hill Church across the street from the Senate Legislative Office Building. Remote attendees will be provided with a Zoom link for the morning’s presentations.

The program will run from 8:00am-11:00am. At 11:00am we will walk over to the Capitol Rotunda where we will have a side-by-side prayer with fellow advocates and legislators. We will disperse from the Rotunda at about 11:45am for members to attend their scheduled legislator meetings.

Countering Anti-Muslim Discrimination: A Messaging Workshop

In light of the common myths and tropes that we often hear about Islam and Muslims, how can we respond in a way that can make a difference? On March 15, the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, this workshop will help people to more effectively address anti-Muslim discrimination and messaging within their own communities.

Participants will explore effective messaging strategies to uplift a vision for a more inclusive and pluralistic country where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. This interactive virtual workshop - featuring content curated by Shoulder to Shoulder, OverZero, the Institute for Social Policy & Understanding, and ReThink Media - will give - will give participants the opportunity to:

Interview with Tolga Misirli from the Niagara Foundation and Turkish American Society of MN

Please join us in welcoming the Niagara Foundation of Minnesota into the Minnesota Multifaith Network! We recently interviewed Executive Director Tolga Misirli to learn about his background, the history of the organization, and how we as a Network can best support them.

The Niagara Foundation was originally founded in Chicago in 2003 by a group of Turkish Americans who wanted to work towards abolishing the ignorance, disunion, and misunderstanding they saw in society through hosting various interfaith activities and events. As the group grew, they expanded to the greater Midwest region, including Minnesota. In 2013, Tolga Misirli became the Executive Director of the Minnesota branch.

On top of his work with the Niagara Foundation MN, Tolga is also a Chemistry and Physics professor at Metro State University. He says that he enjoys taking complex ideas and turning them into concepts that his students can understand. That is also how he approaches his work with the Niagara Foundation. Oftentimes when people want to get involved in interfaith work, they feel intimidated by the idea of trying to solve these big societal problems, or they are unsure of how to interact with people from different faith or cultural backgrounds. That is why the Niagara Foundation focuses on low-stakes opportunities for engagement.

One example of a current opportunity is the 3Faiths@OneTable project. This initiative gathers folks who are interested in developing relationships with people from different religious or cultural backgrounds. The families meet at each other’s homes over the course of three months and get to know one another over the sharing of a light meal or snack. This project has had a
successful run in the past pre-Covid with eight cohorts, and the Niagara Foundation MN is excited to start it up again.

The Niagara Foundation MN also hosts different events including dialogue iftars, book clubs, educational speakers, and their annual Abrahamic Traditions Dinner. If you are interested in learning more, you can visit their website or email Tolga .

“If we truly see ourselves as interconnected, we must endeavor for others as we endeavor for ourselves,” writes Executive Director of Aspen Institute's Religion & Society Program Simran Jeet Singh. If "endeavor for ourselves" and for greater self-discovery is inherently wrapped up in "endeavor for others" and for greater interpersonal engagement, then, as Pope Francis proclaims, “our great challenge is to create a culture of encounter which encourages individuals and groups to share the richness of their traditions and experience; to break down walls and to build bridges.” Cultivating a culture of encounter, grounded in curiosity and wonder, strives for a world in which “we can also speak with those who think differently, as well as those who hold other beliefs, who do not have the same faith.” Advancing common public goods in such a world embraces the reality that great minds do not – and need not – always think alike but requires them to think alongside one another in order to address the urgent matters of our day.

Join us for this daylong workshop at the University of St. Thomas, free and open to all, to explore what it means to create a culture of curiosity, wonder, and encounter. Learn from practitioners, scholars, and leaders about developing skills to engage religious diversity, cultivate curiosity through storytelling, listen with empathetic understanding, navigate difficult conversations, participate in religious and nonreligious spiritual practices, and to develop greater self-awareness for leadership in religiously diverse societies.
